Behind The Scenes: Juliana and Nicolas

It's no mystery that I'm a big fan of modern art and design. I love how clean lines, simplicity and minimalism can make just as bold a statement as ornamental design, it's all a matter of great typography and what you do with all that white space! So when Juliana and Nicolas came to us looking for just that aesthetic, I was excited to revisit all my favorite modern inspirations from furniture giant, Knoll to many of my favorite artists and designers whose work resides at the Cooper Hewitt and Moma Museums.

To start with, the invitation would celebrate the couple's different heritages and the cities they had called home. It also needed to be tri-lingual and incorporate all three languages (English, French and Portuguese) in equal importance throughout all pieces of the wedding stationery. Now that was a challenge that we were excited to tackle! This week I'm excited to share a brand new behind the scenes of the invitation suite we created for them!

We decided early on that an accordion-fold style booklet would be the perfect construction on which to apply our graphics because of its architectural lines and many surfaces for us to tackle the placement of the different languages.
We designed a unique system of modern icons to represent the different languages (Eiffel Tower for French, Sugar Hill for Brazil/Portuguese, etc..). These icons came apart for the different language designations and then locked up together to form the couple's very own insignia.

When designing graphics for the different cities (Rio, Paris and New York), we wanted to make sure that the imagery and illustrations we used were fresh, contemporary and not cliche in any way which is why we decided on abstract snapshots of icons from those very cities instead of more recognizable ones. This also prompted the guests to examine the invitations a little closer and take them on a journey from the beginning to the end and from front to back.

And finally, the finished product! We used ultra-textured watercolor like paper to create a unique surface for us to apply the modern graphics on. Using foil stamping and letterpress printing on different shades of paper also allowed us to play with different effects from matte to shiny and metallics.

We're now bringing gorgeously crafted foil stamping and laser cutting to the forefront of our collection so that you can get the luxe look from within our pre-existing design collection!

The three designs hold three different and very unique looks.  Combining traditional elegance with opulent scrollwork and gold detailing, our Palais invitation design evokes a perfect balance of regal beauty with a timeless chic look. The invitation suite features lush deep letterpress printing and gold foil stamping on luxurious thick papers, perfect for any lavish and ornate affair.

Our second design is a a boldly Art Deco wedding invitation. The Ellington design pairs stunning black and white graphics with luxurious combinations of letterpress and foil stamping on crisp white papers. Perfect for a 1920s inspired wedding or a fashion forward couple looking to make a statement with a uniquely glamorous look.

Styled Shoot: Baiting Hollow Farms

We were thrilled when we were recently invited to participate in a horse meets vineyard styled shoot taking place at Baiting Hollow Farm in New York. One of my favorite sports growing up was horseback riding and I started riding as early as age 7 (showjumping and dressage among other disciplines), well into my late teens so the thought of drawing inspiration from horses was oh so exciting to me! I was even more intrigued when I heard the story of the horses of Baiting Hollow Farm. The Farm is actually a rescue shelter which has saved countless horses from the slaughterhouse by giving them a new home and a second chance. They fund the shelter by selling fantastic wines which are also grown on their vineyard. The most endearing thing I noticed was how they have named all of their wines after the extraordinary rescue horses. How wonderful is that?

This shoot is all about vintage and chic farm meets horses. Headed by the talented photographer Elisabeth Millay, the collaborative team was amazing in bringing every aspect and detail to life! Take a look for yourselves!

Behind The Scenes: Gigi and Peter

Having studied and been a design student in New York City, I've long been a fan of modern and urban art. I have to say, the city has no shortage of gorgeous visuals from street art and murals to the fine art and gallery scene of downtown Manhattan and I love it! When Gigi and Peter came to us for their wedding invitations, they were looking not only to celebrate the joyous occasion but also celebrate their personal style and love for edgy art. They were in love with everything from grunge and graffiti art to the works of vanguard artists like Shepard Fairey and Jean-Michel Basquiat. So we were oh so excited to create something extraordinary for them! I pulled from all the inspiration I knew and places I visited while studying at Parsons School of Design in the East Village to create something both memorable and true to spirit for their big day. Take a look at our behind the scenes!
